Travel Everest

The Royal Geographic Society named the mountain Everest in 1865. The mountain didn’t attract much attention until the 1840s, when a trigonometrical survey in India calculated its exact height. The information that it was the highest mountain on the planet came as a surprise. The Royal Geographic Society learned that the mountain had several local names. There was a debate about the new name until Andrew Waugh persuaded the Society to name the mountain after the head of the trigonometric survey. Although Sir George Everest objected, the mountain was given his name.
