Punakha was once Bhutan’s capital and is now where Je Khenpo (the chief abbot) spends winter. The area enjoys mild weather. Due to its pleasant weather and the natural flow of rivers Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu, the Punakha valley grows plentiful fruit and crops. There are stunning sights of the far-off Himalayas at Dochula pass (3050 m) on Thimphu-Punakha road.
