Shigatse, the capital of Tsang province, lies 354 km west of Lhasa. It lies 90 km west of Gyantse on the south bank of the Brahmaputra at the confluence of the Nyang Chu River. It can be reached by two routes from the capital: the northern road from Golmud, which takes the Daktsuga ferry across the Brahmaputra to Shigatse, and the southern road via the town.
