Bordering the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, Trashiyangtse was established as a district in 1992. It spans an area of 1437.8 square kilometres with elevations ranging from 500 to 5400 meters. The climate varies from sub-tropical in the south to alpine in the north.
Trashiyangtse is famous for its abundant biodiversity and the Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary, which serves as the winter habitat and roosting site for the highly endangered Black-Necked Crane species of birds. This area is well-known for creating customary crafts such as wooden bowls (‘Dapa*), Desho paper made from Daphne fibers, and cultivating Cordyceps in rural regions.
