Day 10: Jaipur

After breakfast we drive to the ancient capital of Amber, which lies 11 km. away from Jaipur. Amber was the ancient capital of the Kachhawaha dynasty for 6 centuries before it was shifted to the newly created Jaipur. We will ascend to the palace fort on the back of an elephant. On the way to Amber we visit the Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds), built in 1799 AD. It contains 953 small windows, each with its own balcony. The windows allowed cool air to circulate and the ladies to watch the processions below without being seen. In the afternoon, visit the City Palace, still the official residence of the royal family, built in a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. At the City Palace Museum we view the private collection of the Jaipur Maharajas. We continue to Jantar Mantar, a stone observatory, the largest of Jai Singh's five remarkable observatories. Its complex instruments reveal the secrets of medieval Indian astronomy. Later we take a walk through Jaipur's colourful bazaar and visit a factory to see the famous block printing that has been done in Jaipur for centuries. In the evening we drive through the new city of Jaipur and visit the Laxmi Narayan Mandir, a white marble Hindu temple. We may have the opportunity to observe a prayer ceremony. Tonight we have dinner with a performance of Indian music and dance.

05

Day 11: Jaipur - Fatehpur Sikri - Agra (approx 180km)

Today we leave Jaipur after breakfast and travel through a series of fields, small towns and villages towards Agra. On the way we stop to visit Fatehpur Sikri, once an imperial capital frozen in time, built by Akbar the Great in the 16th century. This magnificent city of red sandstone was abandoned as abruptly as it was built. It is generally believed that this was due to a failure in the water supply. Arrival in Agra in the evening.

06

Day 12. Agra - New Delhi (approx 216km / 3 hours)

We begin our sightseeing today with a visit to the Agra Fort, built by three of the greatest Mughal emperors. Construction of this massive structure began in 1565 during the reign of Akbar and continued until the time of his grandson, Shah Jahan, who built the impressive imperial quarters and mosque. After visiting the Agra Fort, we proceed to the most beautiful monument in India, the Taj Mahal, an enduring monument to love of everlasting beauty. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1631-52 as a tomb and memorial for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal (Jewel of the Palace), who died at the age of 39 giving birth to her 14th child. We spend enough time at the Taj Mahal to take this impressive reminder home with us. After visiting the Taj Mahal we drive to Delhi.

07

Day 13: New Delhi

In the morning, after breakfast, we have a sightseeing tour of Old Delhi. Sightseeing in Old Delhi includes "Rajghat", the place where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated and Jama Masjid, the great mosque of Old Delhi. Today we also visit the famous "Humayun Tomb" which is the first substantial example of Mughal architecture in India and the "Qutub Minar" which is 71 metres high and was built in 1199. Before returning to the hotel, we drive through New Delhi where we visit India Gate, government buildings and embassies.
